As a new player of Eve, but not a new player of MMO's I have noticed this very human trend of people bashing on a group of people simply due to attitude or experience without truly having knowledge of the underlying cause or history of those they feel disdain for.
The concept of the local pariah has in fact infected many games.
However not many of you would know the history of the "Goons", I sure don't. Yet many of you will raise a finger and point and laugh, simply because others will. You will pick up rocks and toss them, simply because it's said in the realm that they deserve it. You would join the mob for kicks and smear, without truly understanding.
Common human behavior.
From what I've seen, Goonswarm is a crew of people who started small with an intent to fly space and have a blast. Like most young corporations, in it's efforts they included people with similar ideals and intentions. Juvenile as they may be, the hooting and hollering, pillage and scamming, destruction and mayhem of their squad members was something they celebrated and carried with them as a flag into battle.
Eventually, they weren't appreciated by the more civilized members of space, and were attacked repeatedly, under the threat of near destruction. However, somehow, this group of "Immature rapscallions" got together and formed a corps of fleet that not only fought back against their aggressors, but grew to become a strong fleet in itself. Taking over their past aggressors and leaving shreds of steel and blood in its wake.
Like any force that grows in a political universe such as Eve, they will eventually have to involve themselves in politics. Looked down upon by the other Corps, they had to accept them as a force in the universe, if with reluctance, and their disdain would show itself as obvious. The mistakes of the Goonswarm, will have more impact than any other, due in part to that disdain. Those in power would be nothing but happy to see it go, but one cannot ignore. One cannot disrespect the tenacity of a corp of people who made something of themselves and had the gall to have fun while doing it.
From this new member of the universe trying to make his way, all I can see is respect for this crew of people. Who under pressure of politics ingame and out, still refuse to give in, or give up their way of life. There will always be those that others dislike. Much like the Minmatar pirates within the story of Eve, they are a force of illwill pirates that the others hate and would rather see eradicated, but cannot ignore their political presence in the universe.
The bottom line, the world of Eve would not be what it is without its pariah's. The world would be shaped differently if not for people like them. Love them, or hate them, or simply tolerate them... know this. Balance is never achieved through one side of the scale alone. Morality, immaturity, and ethics can only come into play when the conditions that break them exist.
Thank heavens I say for individuals like the Goons who give those with a righteous heart a reason to preach. Who give those with a crazed heart to wreck havoc, to give those that want more from their MMO's than the simple concept of good and evil a reason to truly LOOK at the people who play it and make their own decisions in the game.
It was once said by a Developer that Eve was designed to be a dark and harsh world...
...maybe for some. I don't think it's so dark for a swarm of people out there in space.
